On February 22nd the MAMA Board of Directors met in Gresham. This year Sandee Burbank, Executive Director, called on them to make a serious decision. As Sandee will turn 65 in 2009, she asked them to consider whether or not MAMA has the momentum, assets and human resources to continue its mission when she retires in a year and a half by cutting back more on her time away from home.
Daniel Chandler, MAMA Clinic Director, reported that MAMA is in good financial shape, paying our bills on time and with membership growth continuing.
MAMA now employs eight. We have four doctors and two therapists working with us and now offer “Non-pharmaceutical Wellness Clinics” with an Medical Doctor (M.D.). We have expanded our services to a beautiful clinic in Bend, which we rent a weekend per month. We will host our first social event in Bend on May 1st to facilitate the Bend community network to grow.
Weekly classes, monthly educational and social events and meetings keep staff and volunteers very busy. Improvement to the Gresham location, including handicapped accessibility, will allow MAMA to move the classes and social events there. It will also permit larger classes, as they fill up very quickly now.
MAMA’s Kid’s Camp last June, directed by Jennifer Burbank and one of her favorite activities, was a great success. Jennifer is helping to organize this year’s camp, with Odin and Maggie stepping up to help to implement it.
The state-wide MAMA Tour in October 07, celebrating MAMA’s 25th year, educated the media and the public and produced terrific news coverage. Challenging the claims of the WorkDrugFree Coalition, required traveling to Clatskanie and follow up, which included posting their agenda on MAMA’s website. With Wayne Haythorn as MAMA’s webmaster, the MAMA site continues to improve as information is regularly added.
And so it goes, with more and more premium volunteers stepping up and finding their place in MAMA’s mission. Its thrilling to see so many agree with us and want to help.
It is clear that MAMA is well prepared to make this transition and grow.
